A natural part of aging, marionette lines, are the facial lines that develop vertically between the mouth and chin. Its naming came from the resemblance of a marionette string puppet’s split jaw that allows the mouth to open and close by a puppeteer. The area around your mouth has thinner skin than other areas of your face and has a propensity to wrinkle and sag over time. Like many facial wrinkles, as we get older, we begin to lose collagen. Collagen is a protein that naturally plumps up the skin. Depending on your lifestyle, you may start to notice a loss in skin elasticity and hydration as early as your 20s. Other environmental factors like excessive sun exposure, stress, and diet may contribute to the premature break down of collagen and elastin in your skin. Gravity is another natural component that causes the skin to droop around the chin, creating more prominent “marionette” lines.
Aging is a unique process for every individual; very often a matter of skin type or genetics. Some people have more noticeable wrinkles than others. Wrinkles often define our expressions through muscle movement. For some, marionette lines may be a natural part of the aging process, but it’s possible to minimize their appearance. There are different minimally-invasive options available to safely reduce the appearance of marionette lines.
Some of the procedures we currently use to treat marionette lines include: dermal fillers (injectables) like Restylane, Juvederm, Sculptra, and Radiesse used to add volume and diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles; laser therapies like fractional laser resurfacing treatments to stimulate collagen production; skin rejuvenation treatments like microneedling with PRP; aesthetician services like facials and chemical peels; skincare products like our medical-grade lines formulated to help manage early signs of aging.
